what do you think about when you hear the word conservation?
Understanding what counts as conservation discourse for learners means paying attention to the Logonomic Systems (systems that link particular ways of being and talking in the world with particular ideological statements, claims, and ideas), including those that have shaped and continue to shape the mission of zoos and aquariums themselves (Rowe, 2019). My work builds on this predicament and employs engaged research methods where community participants are co-creators of knowledge.
I am a passionate science education researcher with deep interest in conservation education at zoos and aquariums. When I started my career as a marine biologist in Brazil I built a researcher identity but also loved to share my passion for learning with people at tide pools. As a learning researcher now, I am interested in understanding how people come to care about the ocean and how worldviews and environmental values surface in dialogue during learning experiences. To achieve this, research is better done in co-creation with communities and using environmental critical literacy lenses to understand what matters to diverse groups, why and how.
